Review: fragile parts
by: Joanne Benzenhafer on date: May 14, 2005
This is a cute little machine that worked well three times. However, on the fourth use, the plastic top of the glass pot had fallen inside after washing, and when I pulled it out, the glass broke on the pot - big break and full pot crack - the whole thing is useless without the pot. This is a much too fragile glass container for daily, early morning (read: not quite awake yet) use. I reccomend getting something stronger.

Review: A bad buy
by: Bonnie Stiles on date: February 26, 2005
I bought this espresso/cappuccino maker to make coffee for my husband, but to my dismay, the milk frothing system failed on the first machine I bought, so I had to return it. Strangely enough, it failed again the second time. After calling the customer support line for Mr. Coffee, I found out there was an error in the instructions provided with the machine, and that I was needing to add more water to create more steam pressure. Sure enough, they were right. But now, a month down the road, the frothing system again fails to function, even using the new recommended procedure. I suppose you get what you pay for, but you're really better off avoiding the frustration this machine will bring you.

Review: Built like a tank

Yea...I used to be one of the thousands of fools willing to shell out 4 bucks a crack for StarBucks espresso...I recently received this gem for a Christmas gift and fired it up with out any great expectations...boy was I in for a surprise! A mirror reproduction of StarBucks at a fraction of the cost. *** TIP: Just add International Delights French Vanilla to the expresso and you have a very convincing Vanilla Latte! *** I knew from other customer reviews on frothing my own that I didn't want the hassle.

One more thing...I looked up the price of this unit on the net and couldn't believe it's list price! I was guessing about $75.00 or so...not the $29.99. This unit is built of high quality parts throughout.

A sturdily built, easy to make, easy to clean, easy to look at, and fantastic tasting espresso for a mere $29.99...there must be a God.

Review: A great beginner's tool
by: J-Mo on date: January 3, 2005
As a coffee drinker who's only recently discovered the joy of a good latte, I decided this product, for the price, couldn't be a bad investment.

The maker comes with the appropriate caraffe, and the frothing wand is high enough to get a small pitcher under it. (Note: the pitcher is NOT included.)

The espresso turned out well, and the machine had enough steam for at least 18 ounces of milk, done 6 ounces at a time.

The product is of solid construction and I'm expecting many enjoyable cups of latte from it.

A final note: there is no tamper with it. The width of the filter is a little over 50mm (not quite 2 inches); Amazon carries a couple small enough to accomplish the task.

Review: skip coffee geek and buy this steam machine

I agree entirely with the "wonderful value" and "excellent value" reviews. I have spent 40 years in search of a perfect coffee machine, going from USD5 to USD1000 (superautomatic). I have tried every method of making coffee I know of. Early on I used an electric moka pot like this, but more primitive. Had lots of problems with steaming and moved on. Recently, my wife suggested it could have been my fault (especially since I now know I prefer moka to espresso), so I bought this. Sure enough, I now know how to make coffee with it. Tips: for cappuccino, use 200 ml (3 "cups") of water and stop after coffee hits 2 "cups" then steam milk; use espresso grind and tamp it down pretty well; pour out the residual hot water after you are done and have relieved the pressure; always start with cold machine; always brew 2 "cups" (not 1 or 4); use good organic milk and coffee. Bon appetit.

I am a seasoned espresso drinker and was given this as a gift. I was sceptical at first but after a year of service I cannot praise the performance and value of this little gem enough. For less than 25 bucks this machine makes latte's as good as any Italian cafe I have been (well nearly) The steamer has enough get up and go to do a sufficient job. I have used this every day for a year with no problems. Recently the drip system started getting clogged but for the price I'm still happy and will not hesitate to buy a new one to replace it.

Makes coffee as good as those models that cost in the hundreds.

Review: Wonderful value
by: Daniel Graser on date: July 28, 2005
After reading all of the negative reviews of the lower priced espresso machines I decided to see if they really were that bad. The answer is they are not. The fault mostly lies with people getting broken machines which is very common with any appliance or people simply not using properly. However, this machine is an outstanding value and is built like a tank and is very reliable. The water is heated properly and hot enough that there is always a layer of crema on top. The machine is also very quiet compared to others. But most importantly, the espresso tastes great especially when you get the proper espresso. I can tell you that if you get one that was properly put together you will love it and within a month it will have payed for itself making up for spending 4 bucks for a good cup of espresso at a coffee shop.

I drink a lot of Cafe Americano. I got one of these years ago from my wife for my birthday. I honestly can't tell any difference in mine and the ones from Starbucks. If you insist on spending $200 or more go ahead but you're wasting your money.

After shopping around a bit for a good espresso maker, it seemed that all the machines looked and functioned almost the same, making this one at $30 an awesome buy. I was skeptical of its quality, but it is actually very well designed and easy to use.

Pros:
-Good design (froth tube is high so you can use practically anything to froth your milk)
-Steam pressure is excellent, can froth a whole pitcher of milk with some to spare
-Well thought out instructions
-As good as machines 5 times the price

Cons:
-No tamper is included
-Brews into carafe, not demi-tasse cups (not a huge deal but would be nice)

Overall, an excellent no-frills machine that is well worth the money.

Review: Mr. Coffee espresso machine
by: Cg on date: June 3, 2006
This espresso machine can barely be called an espresso machine. This machine is steam driven rather then pump driven, which for those who don't know isn't very good. Because it is steam driven it doesn't create a constant espresso every time and makes it taste more bitter. Pump machines like gaggia or la pavoni often work alot better. But for someone who's looking for a cheaper buy, then paying $500 and up for a pump machine this machine isn't the worst. It is comparable to other machines in $100-$200 range. One thing that I especially don't like about it is having to use the glass container to get the espresso into rather then it pournig into small espresso cups. Another thing is that it doesn't create a good creme. Overall for some one starting out it isn't bad to train on but wouldn't be worth keeping more then a couple months.

Review: Don't need Starbucks anymore...
by: Reviewer on date: February 16, 2007
I am able to make lattes that are just as good as the ones I get at Starbucks with this. One note though - after using it a couple times, the frothing/steaming tube stopped working. I thought it was broken and freaked out, but discovered that the tube was just clogged. You can twist off the end of the tube and clean it out. Once I did this, it worked perfectly again. I'm saving tons of money now!

While researching Espresso/Cappuccino makers I found this model. I bought it used at a great price. A feature I really like is the control valve for steam/brewing. It has 3 positions; frothing, off, and brewing. I found it was very nice to be able to instantly turn off the steam rather than just switching it to brewing. I gave this to a friend when I transfered and got a different model without the 3 way valve which I don't like. I will be getting another of these very soon.

I recieved one of these as a gift this Christmas, and I really love it!

I always heard that it is difficult to use an espresso machine, but I had no trouble at all with this one. It is *very* simple to use.

The only drawback is that if you're making a full four cups of espresso, there really isn't a lot of steam to go around - just enough for one cup of milk. I guess I can solve that by venting out any remaining steam, opening the top, adding water and trying again - but that seems like a headache.

Even so, I do like this machine, and I have the feeling it will more than pay for itself with the trips to Starbucks I'll be avoiding as a result! :)

Review: Works great!!
by: P. Macy on date: November 14, 2006
Wow! I didn't expect such good espresso, foam, and steamed milk from a low-priced machine. For five years, I have used a Saeco Automatic Vienna (expensive) Espresso Machine daily at home and bought lattes when traveling. But when I agreed to baby-sit 3 grandchildren (under age 6) out of state for 2 weeks while their folks went to Hawaii, I knew I wouldn't have much chance to get out to buy my daily fix. So my daughter-in-law bought me this Mr. Coffee Steam Espresso machine to use while I was at their house. I am surprisingly impressed with the ease of use and quality of results. There are some important steps to follow in order to make consistently good lattes/cappuccinos. Only use espresso beans ground to espresso setting, very important to get the strong espresso flavor; pack the ground espresso coffee in the brew basket, don't just put it in loose; brew to the steam marking on the glass decanter, then do all the steaming/foaming you need, and end with the brew cycle running to the amount of espresso you need. For safety, follow the instructions exactly, especially making sure not to remove the water reservoir cap or the brew basket until the pressure has been relieved, which I do by turning the nob to steam and letting the pressure release through the frothing tube. Follow the instructions, use espresso ground coffee, and you will have great tasting and looking beverages, with no "explosions"! If my expensive espresso machine ever fails, I think I will save the $$$$ and buy myself one of these for home use.

I wanted one of these for years and for $30 how could I resist?!

It works great and is easy to use.

Nothing beats waking up to a few shots of fresh espresso.

A Hint: pre-ground coffee is too coarse. You need to grind your own. I found out when I dumped the coffee out of the filter and found that some of it was still dry. The steam pressure forces the water through the fine-ground coffee -- that's how these things work. If the coffee is too coarse, the water just shoots past it. Grind your own to a fine grind, not quite to the point of powder.

I was paying almost $5 at Starbucks for Vanilla Lattes, now I can make them at home, and they taste practically the same! I only had a problem once with steaming the milk, and that was my fault - not enough steam left for frothing. You have to remember how much water you put in, and keep an eye on the carafe to determine when to steam the milk. I bought vanilla syrup from Starbucks, and voila - perfect vanilla lattes. I'm thrilled with the machine and have been making one or two lattes a day for two weeks. The machine is holding up great. Now I just need to get more syrup flavors, and I'll be my very own barista!

My two year old Senseo broke, so I went shopping to replace it. Now, I've perfected the art of making my own Senseo pods, so I was looking to buy the plastic coffee maker itself. I have no complaints, other than the typical learning curve concerns (i.e., I've got a few techniques to perfect. But I'm getting there!) Little did I know that expresso could come so cheaply! I've got to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this machine at first, but the reviews for this great little coffee machine were good and I figured, for the price, it was worth a bit of a gamble. Besides, I was getting tired of paying $2-$4 for a double or quad shot, and not being able to make it at home.

I'm here to tell you the gamble paid off. This little baby makes a great cuppa joe! As always, your results depend on the quality of the coffee, so don't cheap out (with the money you're saving on this machine, you can afford to buy good coffee).

It's not very fast, especially when steaming milk, but it's more than adequate. Don't hesitate to buy this!

Review: fragile parts

This is a cute little machine that worked well three times. However, on the fourth use, the plastic top of the glass pot had fallen inside after washing, and when I pulled it out, the glass broke on the pot - big break and full pot crack - the whole thing is useless without the pot. This is a much too fragile glass container for daily, early morning (read: not quite awake yet) use. I reccomend getting something stronger.

Review: A bad buy
