Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black

After only one month of regular morning use the machine began to intermittantly malfunction. It would not complete a brewing cycle and would tell you to open the tap. This would go on for several attempts before it would finally complete a brewing cycle. Highly over rated and over priced.
We bought this pot at williams sonoma Two months ago and just love it. We have had no problems with it and use it all day long for regular and decaf coffee. I've alway been a cofee lover, but since we got this machine even my husband has turned into a coffee lover. In fact, I think he loves it more than me! Our friends have started dropping in on there way to Starbucks and never seem to get to starbucks. I will say that the been used is very important. We found a nice houseblend at Costco that works great and is reasonable. Never bitter, always just right. You must make sure that the been is not too oily or the machine does not react correctly.
While nothing works impeccably, this machine is very close. The coffee and espresso it produces is top notch and I have no problems with it being hot enough, as some reviews I have read would suggest. Starbucks beans in the grinder seem to stick and I often am told to "Fill Beans" when it is perfectly full. Stirring the beans during grinding will fix this. I seem to use pre-ground ILLY all the time anyway. Fast warm-up, easy cleaning (once every 60 cups). Design, functionality and product are all high-class for this value. (vs 2000 Jura machines that are essentially identical).
We purchased our Jura E8 from a local kitchen store. We just completed our 500th cup. Love the coffee and especially the espresso that it makes. We make Americano every morning and enjoy a cup of espresso or two after lunch every day. I use Lavazza super crema coffee (available here at Amazon) for a fabulous cup!
I experienced the same problem as the other reviewer who rated the product with one star. I called the 800 number and found out I was rinsing the machine too often. The phone rep was knowledgeable and helpful - she helped me with the correct setting and now the machine works like a charm.
You are buying convenience here, it does not make great espresso, but good enough for not so picky drinkers that want a quick shot without much work. Very good for a quick latte too. It is very picky on beans, if coffee does not come out like one reviewer mentioned, it is likely that the grind is too fine and you need to set the grinder a notch or two down. eg. I have no problem with Lavazza Top Class at the finest setting, but need to dial back a notch with Lavazza Super Crema because it was clogging. The brewing temperature is not a hot as the S series but still hotter than most other super-auto out there. I would get the the S if not for the aluminum thermoblocks.
We bought this machine after quite a bit of research. One area that I delved into with this manufacturer and several other coffee websites is the issue of "crema coffee" and how it compares to drip coffee. We bought this machine with the intention of generally making crema coffee and occasionally making lattes. If I had it over, I would have bought the automatic drip coffee maker instead.
"Crema coffee" is simply this type of machine's version of coffee. It keeps pushing water through the coffee, getting weaker and weaker the longer it runs. The end result is really a different flavor than drip coffee. Everyone told us it would taste better, but it just tastes different. It's a little more sour than I expected. I've tried the exact same coffee with our drip maker and then with this espresso machine, and I can't say that the crema coffee tastes better than the drip. It takes getting used to.
The automatic features of this machine are very nice. I agree with the reviewer that wrote this is a machine of convenience. It is very convenient and easy to clean.
I do have problems with the frother coming apart when I use it. When this happened, it was quite a shock - it sprayed out scalding milk all over the counter and kitchen, causing me quite a scare. The frother snaps on and off, so if you are not careful, it can pop off when switching frothing modes. Once you learn how to hold it securely, this shouldn't happen, but I have to admit that my first experience with this has left me head shy, and I really haven't used it much since. I was pretty surprised that there was no safety feature in place to keep this from happening. Steam is very hot! I had a manual espresso maker before this and never had any problem, because the frothing wand was securely attached to the machine. With this E8, this can come apart when switching froth modes, so play with it when it's cold to get comfortable with it.
The only really negative thing I have to say about this experience is Capresso's customer service. It is really sub par. Their employees are always terse, rude and flat out arrogant every time I have emailed them for assistance. This is the reason I am putting 3 instead of 4 stars. When you are spending $1,000 dollars for a coffee maker, the manufacturer should be providing excellend customer service.
We have only had this maker for a few months, but our overall impression is that it is well put-together and has a lot of neat and convenient features. I think if you plan to use it for lattes more than crema coffee, you probably won't be disappointed.
OK, this thing ain't cheap. I mean, how can you ever justify spending $1000 on a coffee maker?? I named mine Miss AnniBirthenTine. She was so expensive, that she was my 'Anni'versary, 'Birth'day, and Val'enTine's day gift all rolled into one item! That being said, I admit I have a bit of an unhealthy relationship with my coffee maker. I love her. Fine. I said it.
One thing I have noticed is that Miss Anna is smarter than I am. She tells me when to clean her, fill her with water, etc. And, I love that. She's clean and polite - never demanding. Here and there she does some things I am not sure of, but nothing has been serious. For instance, I also experienced what the reviewer who gave one star said - intermittent coffee - part way through she would just turn off. I did not call customer service, but instead did some troubleshooting on my own. I came to the conclusion that the beans I bought were a bit oily (which is warned against in all the manuals and videos) and were jamming the works. I ran it through a clean cycle with a tablet and she has been a happy coffee maker since.
Miss Anna has been a part of our family since early Jan 2005. I drink Capuccinos every morning and use the hot water a lot during the winter for tea and soup. When I am feeling rather saucy, I even make espresso with half and half. YUM. You would have to rip this thing out of my cold, dead arms to get it away from me. I love Miss Anna. When I am away on vacation, I am sad about the mediocre swill people call coffee that I have to settle for until I return home. As long as I don't think about the money, I love this thing more than I can describe.
The machine is superb! It makes consistently great tasting coffee each and every time. It sets up easily and turns on with a push of a button. We have our coffee within minutes just by pushing a button and placing our cup under the spout. We choose our selection of coffee strenght, amount 1 oz - 8 oz, 1 - 2 cups and drink up. It automatically shuts off and we determine when. I have not been able to produce a thick foam with the frother and thought it would be more powerful. But overall it's a great addition to our kitchen.
The E8 is quick and convenient and makes a decent cup. It is great to have fresh coffee available whenever. It is also noisy and uses a lot of coffee. The coffee is drinking temperature on delivery. I would prefer it hotter. It does make espresso drinks and is an improvement over drip makers for regular coffee. But at 10 times the cost? Not a great value.
I bought this for my wife who drinks about six cups every morning (finally got her to switch to mostly decaf). I first bought a less expensive (still @$400) machine which was not automated. Took it back when I realized that it was probably share space on the counter with our current coffee maker as using it involved additional tasks and with three kids we already have enough tasks.
The Jura-Capresso works great - easy to use, easy to clean (really only the steam wand and that is simple to clean as the espresso or coffee fills the cup) and no extra work. It tells you when to empty the grounds (about every 10 cups), and fill the water and beans. It rinses the nozzle automatically when it shuts down (two hour auto shut down) and tells you to rinse it (by pushing a button) when you power it up. I cannot think of an easier way to have coffee, espresso, cappuccino or cafe au lait anytime we feel like it. I especially like the fact that we are not tied into using a company's pods (paying a premium and wasting a lot of paper) and can load any bean we desire or use the bypass to use ground coffee.
Two wishes - a larger water tank (or ability to hook up to water supply) and allowing the angle of the steam wand to move higher as it can be a pain to put the wand into larger mugs. But those are just wishes - not gripes.
Two months and no problems - just got the steamer container that came free but haven't tried it yet.
A great buy!!!!
Have owned the Jura Capresso E8 since July of 2006. Have made over 750 coffees since that day. Heavy entertaining and daily latte's bring value to the machine.
Machine has responded well under all circumstances. Only problem thus far has been with the frother which would jam from the froth to steam position. Contacted Capresso and the expressed a new attachment. Have had no additional issues with machine thus far.
Excellent crema and good temperature for espresso. ( Warm the expresso cups before hand )
As with other machines I have owned, experimentation with coffee to milk ratio takes some time. Once determined the machine makes a consistent brew each time.
Have run cleaning cycles and filter changes when prompted. Machine really is super-automatic. The machine informs you when water is needed, when beans need to be filled and when grounds need to be emptied.
Would recommend the machine without hesitation. Should this change I will update the review.
I can't believe how much I like this. It is costly but it is worth it. I can really taste the difference in the coffee and it is very easy to use. It tells you when you need to add coffee or water. It cleans itself and tells you when it needs service. The coffee is every bit as good as if you bought it from Starbucks.
I had a C1000 that had a recall - they offered to fix it or sell me the E8 for half price.
The E8 is much easier to run and the coffeee is fantastic, hot and lots of crema and you can make it super strong or Mild AND you can control the amount of water.
We've had this for about one month, used it twice a day (two espresso drinkers in the house) and it's now starting to fail once a day. The machine will fail for a couple of attempts, ask you to open and close the tap, and evenutally work correctly. The espresso tastes great, but it's not worth the headache of using up beans on failed attempts. For this much money, you'd think they would have worked out the kinks.
The reviewer from '04 that was having problems didn't know about a super easy fix...all he had to do was call the 800 number and they'd walk him thru the relatively simple, 1 minute cleaning procedure. My S8 machine was doing the exact same thing, and they halped me out without any problems. Capresso has been great.
I bought the E8, used it for three weeks and ended up returning it. I tried everything but couldn't get a decent tasting shot of espresso.
I don't think machine gets hot enough, so espresso shots were very weak tasting! I tried changing the dial on the grinder, letting the machine heat up longer, but nothing improved the taste. I think it just uses too little espresso, as the pods when they are finished were smaller than I've seen from other machines.
The machine is convenient to use, I will say that. But it looks cheap, and makes mediocre espresso, what's the point? I've had better espresso from much cheaper machines!
This machine made the best coffee I have had in the States, the layer on top that is produced is reminiscent of the coffee I had in Italy. I would recommend this machine to any and everyone.
I share some bad experiences too.
I bought the E8 on Amazon and used it for 3 weeks. It was working fine initially until I started using my Capresso beans, which were delivered to me just last week (made use of the Amazon rebate offer). The machine seems stuck and there is no longer a clear stream of brewed coffee. Instead, the coffee came out in droplets literally and the amount also dwindled. The machine kept requesting that its tap be turned on. I've stopped using it altogether and have emailed the Capresso customer service for assistance yesterday. There's no point calling the toll-free number since I'm never home during office hours to go through the process. This should not happen since the beans ought to be compatible in the first instance.
Other than that, I must say the machine is simple to use and very convenient. Although I do agree with Roell that it does look cheap.
I have to say, I *love* my E8! I tried one at a store and, after a lot of research, settled on Jura Capresso because of the cleaning cycle feature (most others you have to remove the "brew group" once a week or so and manually clean it - I was *so* not going to do that!). I settled on the E8 versus other JC's because of the price and the features... the higher-end models' extra features (none of which directly affect the quality of a single cup) were worth the additional cost, especially since I live alone.
I've no complaint about the temperature of the coffee, as long as I pre-heat my cup. A little hot water out of the spiget does the trick. I use a decent coffee bean from a local store and have excellent results. I did have to play around with the grind settings, but I expected that.
The frother (I don't have the fancy add-on) does a better-than-decent job of frothing/foaming milk; however, it's not as good as a coffee-house machine wielded by a pro, with perfect-temperature milk and a cold pitcher. However, it works much better than any home-based espresso machine I've encountered, and much better than what one often gets from a disaffected coffee counter person.
The flavor is rich and full - like cafe crema or espresso ought to be. While, again, a true barista with a true pro machine and the best beans can indeed produce a better cup, this is far better than what I typically get in a high-end coffee shop. That's part of what originally sold me on it - I found out the store that I sampled it at used "cheap supermarket beans" (as they put it).
One does have to be careful with the beans; if they're oily, they'll cling to each other and not make their way down the hopper. The solution? Stick your finger in the beans and swirl once, or don't use oily beans (oily doesn't necessarily mean more flavor). I like the beans I use but they do stick slightly, and a little touch with my finger fixes the 'problem'. The manual, video, web site, and talking chicken that came with the product makes this very clear.
Cleaning is a breeze - every couple of days I empty the hopper that catches the pucks (grounds). Once a week or so I rinse out the drip tray. Every once in a while it alerts me that I need to run a cleaning cycle: in goes the tablet and that's it.
My only complaint - and I knew this going in - is that for $1000 it ought not be 100% plastic. The spigot that the coffee comes out is plastic, and raises/lowers. I'm always careful, because if something that I have control over is going to break, it's going to be this piece. More expensive models have metal for this piece, but I couldn't see adding $500+ dollars for this.
I was originally concerned not having a cup warmer might be an issue. It says it has a passive cup warmer in some of the online literature, but that's baloney - the top doesn't get any warmer than rooom temperature. However, it is no inconvenience (and I'm pretty lazy) to release some water from the spigot into the cup, and let it sit for a few seconds.
This is just about the best thing ever! I used to go to coffee shops and drop $7 - $10 a day. I figure I'll make that back after costs in about a year. It's not expensive - it's economical in my book!
I think I am a bit of a coffee snob. I have had this machine for a few weeks now and it's going strong! I absolutely love it! I was concerned reading other reviews about Starbucks coffee not working so good in the machine, but the 'espresso' roast is working fine in my machine and I have had no problems yet.
The crema on this machine is wonderful! We're making coffee all the time. My guests are in awe of the machine, marveling at how quickly it brews fabulous coffee drinks! I made 6 different drinks the other night in just a few minutes and everyone loved them. It's great for entertaining.
My only issue so far is finding the right milk to froth. The fat free, lactose free milk that we normally drink doesn't yield much froth (it's barely milk to begin with). So, I'm going to try 2% and see how that works.
I really can't say enough good things about this machine. It does everything it's supposed to do and so far, has impressed the most discriminating coffee snob....ME!
Buy it, you won't be disappointed. It's worth every penny. I am going to name it I like it so much!
We have had this machine for over 4 years and it has been great. I'm not kidding when I say its the machine we value most in our house - a good cup of coffee is important to us and we couldnt live without it. In fact whenever we are away on a trip its the thing we miss the most.
Anybody who thinks this is expensive should do the math. My wife and I used to go to stabucks every morning and spend $3.75 for a grande latte. If you add it up, thats $2,000 per year. This paid for itself in less than a year and we have had it for four.
It will break and has done so twice over 4 years. But you can send it in and get it repaired for $100 or so. Still a great investment.
Anybody who goes to starbucks would be alot better off (not to mention saving time waiting in line) buying a Jura. Its a no-brainer.
Seriously its like having a automated crack pipe. Okay I have now moved my E8 into my bedroom. I also have a Delonghi Magnifico and let me tell you its like the difference between the Fiat (Delonghi) and a BMW (Capresso). I actually work for a major coffee store company and know quite a bit about coffee. In America you don't have true passionate and knowlegable Baristas like in Italy but instead usually some drug infested teen-ager who doesn't care about how your espresso is made or even what he or she puts in it. So you are much better off going automatic. Even Starbucks now goes completely automatic. I use Illy dark roast - it cost a little more but hey a tradeoff between single ply TP so I can have better coffee is well worth it. Enjoy
Owned the older version c-1000 and found this machine to be quite similar with a few more "bells and whistles." Machine is very reliable and easy to use. I especially enjoy the ability to vary cup sizes by ounces (or ml). Another important feature is the fast warm up, which allows you to enjoy a cup of hot coffee at any time, day or night. The optional frother attachment is great, but would only recommend using if having a party. Too much work for one cup of cappucino.
My company bought one of these to replace the similar Capressa 1000 machines which finally broke after N years.
After 2 days, the LED readout of the functional information stopped working. The machine continues to operate, but you can't tell what's going on, how much water it will use for your particular cup etc.
Very disappointing. We'll see how good the warranty repair is, and report back to you after we experience *that*.
If anyone had suggested that I would spend that much money on a coffee maker, Iwould have laughed. Once you use this machine, it is no longer necessary to spend money for coffee at any of the national chains. It is quick, convenient, easy to operate, and makes an excellent cup of coffee.
This machine makes wonderful coffee, but I had problems after the first week when it would grind coffee, but not deliver the product. Telephone support was entirely unsatisfactory experience. Long wait time - over 15 minutes on two separate occasions. In addition, an annoying requirement to enter a digit by on the keypad about every minute in order to stay in the cue. The first time, when I finally got a person to answer the phone, I was placed on hold - gave up after five minutes. The second time, I was sent to voice mail after patiently pushing buttons at regular intervals. Seems that the company could do a better job of supporting their product.
I researched all of the top espresso machines, including Rancilio, Gaggia, Nespresso, Expobar, and Jura Capresso. Most machines I eliminated because they had copper or brass boilers vs. safer stainless steel. I also wanted something easy to use and self cleaning. The Jura Capresso E8 makes perfect crema espresso with a push of a button, and the manual doser works great for decaf. I added the FrothExpress attachment which siphons milk from my stainless steel milk container and makes instand microfoam froth perfectly. According to the Jura Capresso rep I talked with, this machine has similar interior workings to their much more expensive machines (i.e. Z5), at a much lower cost. The black plastic housing looks great on the counter and seems durable. Not worth the extra money for the E9 and more metal. I am very particular when it comes to the flavor of espresso, and this machine makes espresso that rivals any that I have had at home or at a coffee store, in terms of flavor and temperature. This machine is one of the best home appliances I have ever purchased. I do not work for Jura Capresso. At $850 with no tax and free shipping through Amazon, it is a bargain.
Jura-Capresso E8 Super Automatic - lucky enough to find a used one here on Amazon, only 400 cups (great feature, being able to recall the exact count). I love this machine. Have had it for a few weeks now, and it always makes perfect drinks. Couldn't be easier. I worry a bit about the electronics but it sure makes it easy. The only reason I don't give it five stars is the black plastic. I too would love this to had been metal however, I find it very attractive non-the-less.
The forthing works great! I read a number of concerns but have experienced great steamed milk and fantastic looking cappuccino's, beautifully layered.
My wife and I ordered the E8 this Year. After we got sick of Starbucks etc.
I'm not the biggest Coffee consumer, but I enjoy a cup once in a while. My Wife uses it daily, very comfortable - You just hit the button and here's you're fresh coffee. My opinion - tastes better than Starbucks, Dunkin donuts etc. and it cost's you less.
The coffeemaker let you pick how strong you like your coffee - very easy to operate, easy to clean etc. The machine tells you what to do.
There a couple similar Machines on the market. Check Saecco, Solis etc.
I like the Jura the best, it's made in Switzerland (great Quality standards), it has a compact neat design and it's easy to operate.
The shipping was efficent and quick, I ordered it and received the machine 4 day's later.
If you have this machine, you don't go back to starbucks or Dunkin Donuts
Kind Regards

I think it just uses too little espresso, as the pods when they are finished were smaller than I've seen from other machines.
The machine is convenient to use, I will say that. But it looks cheap, and makes mediocre espresso, what's the point? I've had better espresso from much cheaper machines!
Enjoy
