Mr. Coffee ECM21 4-Shot Espresso Machine and 8-Cup Coffeemaker Combo, Black

Review: better than i expected

i ordered my coffeemaker after reading the reviews below.. since they were mixed, i went for it anyway- i had a good experince, the coffee was good and i did not spill when i poured - overall id have to agree that i am pleased with my decision to purchase this coffeemaker

Review: Very disappointed
by: Abigail Beecher on date: May 13, 2006
I have to say that I am very disappointed in this purchase. The decanter on the coffeemaker side leaks a LOT when pouring, even when you pour slowly. The frother on the espresso side does not work at all on my unit. I've tried it twice now and get absolutely nothing. The coffeemaker side does brew a good cup of coffee, but I could have gotten that in a $20.00 single unit. I definitely would not advise buying this.

Review: Very decent machine
by: Zappattack on date: March 25, 2006
I had a DeLonghi combo machine before this (slightly higher in price, but comparable), and had lots of problems, including that it only lasted for about a year. This one seems to be constructed better. I like the ease with which the steam vessel is closed, the screw cap is very secure, and easy to tighten. The frother spout swings to the side, which helps keep it out of the way when not in use. On the coffee maker side, the lift out basket makes it easy to remove the grounds.
Problems?; only one really, and that is very minor. The decanter: the lid only lifts up a bit unless you take it completely off. It gets in the way when filling and rinsing, also the shape of the spout makes coffee spill out the side slightly, if you pour it too fast.
Overall, I'm really happy with this machine...it's easy to use, and so far, seems like it's going to last.

Review: Excellent for the price
by: Ruzbeh on date: August 24, 2006
I have been using the Mr. Coffee Espresso machine and coffeemaker for just over a month now and have had absolutely no problems with it. My past experience with Mr. Coffee has been that the plastic handle tends to break or come loose after a while. This particular design seems to be slightly better, though time will tell...
The only issue I had with it was the extremely short wire used to plug into an electrical outlet (12"-18" only). It has intentionally been designed that way as a security feature but I would have preferred another foot of wire length.
Overall I'm very satisfied.

Review: Not all that great.

We were excited to have an espresso maker in the house. I wish we had now bought two seperate units. This machine has broken, and we've had it just over a year. We haven't been able to use the steamer spout for a long time. It went out quickly after we bought the unit. The spillage is considerable if you quickly pour a cup of coffee. Buy two seperate units.

Review: You get what you pay for
by: Bargain Hunter on date: October 16, 2006
This is the least priced combo coffee/espresso maker on Amazon. It works and does its job, but to a certain extent. You really do get what you pay for. So for the price, I would say it meets expectations. If you're not picky and your priority is cost, then you could say that this could do. But if you really want quality, then go for another one.

Findings:
- When done, the coffee and espresso aren't so hot. They are just warm and not burning hot like McDonald's coffee. So if you make coffee from here, you better drink it fast!
- The steamer part does it's job of frothing coffee, but it doesn't heat it as well either. It runs out of ammo or power too quickly. When you make a latte, you taste the warm espresso on the bottom, but the froth or milk is cold!
- There is no sign or alert to tell you the coffee and/or espresso is done. You have to rely on the naked eye to discern if it has stopped brewing.
- I hate the coffee carafe. The lid doesn't open all the way, making it hard to clean the inside. The lid isn't easily detachable either.

Review: Okay product
by: Ed on date: January 10, 2007
The only issue I have with this product is using the frother. The tube could be redesigned to allow a bit more movement when frothing the milk. Other than that it is a good buy for the money.

Review: Awesome Machine for the Price!
by: S. Ellison on date: November 28, 2006
If you are looking to try your hand at Espresso making and want to save money and space, then this is your baby!

We previously had the entry level Mr Coffee Espresso maker and ran it to death. We had it about 2 1/2years and it was used just about everyday. If you figure the cost of your average Cap, Esp or Latte drink we more than got our moneies worth. We made the small additional investment of a thermometer and frothing cup just to make the job easier. Never having made anything more than regular coffee, this is a great machine to learn on.
Anyway, we finally killed it, and decided to replace it and our previous coffee maker with this combo machine which takes up less space.

Review: GREAT COFFEE IN BROOKLYN!!
by: Jamila D. Isaac on date: November 24, 2006
I BOUGHT THIS MACHINE JUST BECAUSE I BROKE MY OLD ONE AND NEEDED A NEW ONE ASAP. I NEVER OWNED A COFFEE MACHINE WITH AN ESPRESSO MAKER SO I MADE THE PURCHASE BECAUSE THE PRICE WAS BETTER THAN THE ONE DAY SALE AT A BIG NAMED DEPARTMENT STORE THAT WILL GO UNNAMED. I ORDERED IT IN THE AFTERNOON AND SUPRISINGLY RECEIVED THE PACKAGE THE VERY NEXT DAY. THIS MACHINE HAS MADE THE BEST COFFEE I'VE EVER HAD AT HOME. I WOULD DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MACHINE TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING IT. I HAVEN'T MADE ANY ESPRESSO YET BUT I'M SURE THAT IT WILL TASTE JUST AS GOOD AS THE REGULAR COFFEE. HOPE THIS HELPS AND HAVE A BLESSED ONE!

I RATE THIS COMBO COFFEMAKER 4 STARS, BECAUSE OF ITS VALUE , I REALIZE THAT YOU CAN SPEND QUITE A BIT MORE MONEY TO GET NOT VERY MUCH MORE COFFEE MAKER, BUT THE PRIMARY REASON FOR ME WAS THE COMPACT SIZE, IT FIT RIGHT THE WAY I WAS LOOKING FOR, AND ALTHOUGH I WANTED THE ABILITY TO MAKE EXPRESSO, I DID NOT WANT TO SPEND HUNDREDS MORE FOR THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT I WOULD BE DOING IT.
I WOULD HAVE LIKED A TIMER ON THE COFFEE SIDE, AND IT IS A LITTLE SLOW IN THE BREW PROCESS, THE CARAFE SOMETIMES SPILLS A LITTLE, BUT AT THE PRICE I PAID IT IS WELL WORTH IT,
IF IN THE FUTURE I WANT OR NEED MORE OUT OF A MACHINE AT LEAST I'LL HAVE THIS ONE TO COMPARE WHAT I WANT

Review: Excellent Product
by: R. Rodriguez on date: January 11, 2007
What an excellent coffee machine. And what a value. You can run both sides at the same time to accomodate everyone. Buy it...you'll like it!

Review: Better than most at an affordable price......
by: Harold A. Hoffman on date: March 19, 2007
The machine runs exactly as advertised and as many reviews stated the coffee carafe does have to pour slowly or it dribbles down the front of the pot but that is mearly a learning curve you get with any product. My only suggestion is that the future machines come with a clock to start the coffee and turn off the heating element at a preset time interval.

Review: Fantastic machine minus the frother.
by: S. Santos on date: March 10, 2007
My wife and bought this to replace a more expensive coffeeemaker that decided to quit working after just a year. Since having the Mr. Coffee, we have been nothing short of impressed with its overall quality and ease of use. The frother however, could be designed a bit better because it is difficult to get the cup under it while the machine sits on the counter.

Review: Even easier- and better- than I thought
by: mlm on date: March 9, 2007
I wanted a dual coffee/espresso maker thinking I would mostly drink regular coffee with the occasional latte indulgence, but I was totally surprised how easy it is to use, and now it's lattes every day. Also, there was almost no learning curve-- my first cup (surprisingly, from what I've read elsewhere) was near perfect, and apparently it wasn't a fluke.

If there is ANY drawback, it's only that there is no warming plate under the espresso carafe (but I'm sure a purist would scoff at such a notion).

If I have one recommendation, it is to spring for a stainless steel carafe (or whatever it's called) to steam your milk. I'm not a physicist so I'm not sure why, but it does make a difference.

In summation, this is a great deal on an excellent delivery system for my drug of choice. (I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because I have to grind the beans, and it didn't include an intravenous unit)

Review: Excellent + Great-looking, elegant Machine + Best Price!
by: MissBargain on date: March 8, 2007
In addition to the extreme speed in delivery by Amazon, this machine made both my husband's and my day, since he enjoys espresso and i enjoy american coffee. It doesn't take too much space on the kitchen counter, it's really good-looking (i chose the black one), plus functions great without delivering too much water for a "fast served" coffee, so you have your 2 cups ready in 10 minutes, which is fine. You get your coffee hot and it STAYS hot for more than 13 minutes. My husband enjoys the espresso side pretty much - actually i think he's over-using it now!! All pieces are easily removed for easy washing. i love bargains and have visited several stores in and off line and saw lots of huge machines or little ones at big prices; but THAT price for THAT quality & those features was UNBEATABLE. You're sure to get a great value for your money.

Review: Pleased With Product.
by: kas from md on date: March 19, 2007
For the price of this Coffeemaker/ Espresso Machine, this little guy is great. usually you would pay anywhere from 39.99-69.99 for a espresso machine alone. I like having both pieces together. But the only thing i didn't like was once i received it, the machine was damp with the smell of bleach which worried me, but i clean it again and everything has been fine since. This was the best coffeemaker combo i had found for the money.

Review: BEWARE -- PIECE OF LEAKING JUNK
by: Joan of Arc on date: March 25, 2007
Maybe I just got a rare defective machine, but this coffee maker is the worst coffee maker I have ever purchased and overall a worthless piece of cr*p. From Day One it has leaked EVERYWHERE, every time I try to use it, it leaks all over the counter, all over the floor, water not merely leaks out from everywhere, it POURS out from the bottom and the sides. The design externally is nice -- it is a fairly compact nice size and looks very nice. However I don't care how cute it is if if DOESN'T WORK. It also has some bizarre design features such as this ultra-weird removable BUCKET that you have to fill with water for the coffee maker, and this bizarre "showerhead" feature over the filter basket, which if you don't swivel it into position each and every time, will pour further water all over the place. Also, it is very easy to forget to put the first lid on the espresso machine before covering it with the second lid, which could result in some further disaster. Overall, I rate this 5 stars for external frontal appearance and 0 for overall design. It is possible I got a fluke defective one but even if it worked, I find the internal design of it bizarre and convoluted. The only decent affordable coffee maker in my opinion is (was) the Braun, but that was before they started making them in Mexico and now those are cr*p too.

Review: Almost perfect
by: Sandy B on date: June 27, 2007
Does everything it's supposed to. Easy to use, brews espresso and coffee at the same time, nice looking. I haven't used the frother so can't comment on that. Main complaint is the rubber washer in the espresso screw down lid came off and has to be put back on with every use. Otherwise I would give it 5 Stars.

Review: Mr. Coffee Espresso Machine and Coffeemaker Combo
by: B. Chipman on date: May 12, 2007
On a scale of 1-5 stars, this product should receive zero.
After less than one month's use, parts have started to rust. The steamer arm provides little steam; instead large amounts of condensation collect under the lid which runs down the back of the unit each time the lid is opened.
On the coffee side, the plastic notches on the lid of the pot are flimsy and have already started to bend and tear, making it difficult to reattach. The lid is an essential part of the coffeemaker, since it starts/stops the coffee flow.
I recommend NOT investing in this coffeemaker.

Review: Style AND Substance - A GREAT Coffeemaker
by: M. Steed on date: April 4, 2007
I have had this machine since February and use it nearly every day. This is definitely one of the best coffeemakers I have ever owned, and I haven't had one single problem with it.

When I was deciding whether or not to buy it, some of the negative reviews had me a little skeptical. But I am SO glad that I took a chance. It was absolutely worth it for me.

I honestly don't see how some of the reviewers have had some of the problems that they have. Reviewer 'Joan of Arc' seemed to have quite a bit of leakage problems. It must have been a defective machine, because ours hasn't leaked one time -- not even a little drop. I'll go over a few of the issues she and some others had:

- The removable water reservoir (or "bucket" as she called it) for the coffeemaker is easy to remove and replace. If you don't want to take it out to fill it with water, just pour water into it. It is marked clearly and is easy to read even when stationed on the machine. No problem.

- The showerhead over the filter basket swivels outward to allow you to change the coffee filter. When you're done, you just swivel it back into place. I don't see how you can forget to do it, because the lid is designed so that you can't even close it if the showerhead isn't moved back into place. It really isn't even something you have to think about.

- Some people have had problems with the carafe lid. It doesn't open fully, but opens wide enough for me to clean it with little problem. We haven't had any problems with it dripping or leaking at all. It's like any other carafe that I've used over the years.

- 'Joan of Arc' mentioned that it was easy for her to forget to put the 1st lid on the espresso side before putting down the second lid. I'm not exactly sure what she was referring to, but I think she meant the water reservoir cap and lid. Again, I don't see how you could forget to screw the cap back on after you fill it with water. I suppose it's a learning curve. The first few times I used the machine, I referred to the instruction manual to make sure I did everything right. Now I can crank out good espresso and cappuccino in minutes without really even thinking about it. It just takes a little practice, like with anything else.

- Some people wished for a frother that was a little more accessible to make it a little easier to froth milk in a larger pitcher. That would have been a nice feature. It isn't too difficult to use, however, and seems to work just fine. The milk is always steaming hot, and the froth doesn't get cold for us.

- The coffee and espresso COULD be a LITTLE hotter. I don't like scalding hot coffee anyway, so it doesn't bother me too much, but for someone that does, it might be a small issue. Again, it doesn't seem like a deal-breaker, though.

- A clock or timer would have been a nice addition as well, but not having it doesn't affect the quality of the machine. It would have made a good product even better.

We have used both the coffee side and espresso side many times, and have yet to have any problems. I think some people may have received defective machines, but any product can be purchased defective. Some issues can easily be resolved with a little practice in getting used to the controls and operation of the whole machine, but once you do, it's more than easy to make good quality coffee and espresso.

I would definitely have to say that I got a great deal on a sleek, stylish machine that also works very well and makes good quality coffee. If you 'get what you pay for', then I made out like a bandit. Perfectly satisfied and VERY happy I bought it.

Review: So far so good!
by: Sabad One on date: May 10, 2007
I purchased this coffee maker a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed many good coffees since. I am Italian, and I find the espresso as good as a good espresso prepared with a moka. This is good enough for me, but don't expect a REALLY good espresso, the kind you can have in that special little bar in a hidder corner of an Italian city. I did not have any trouble with leaks anywhere, so far (as some reviewer complained about). Only small complain, the espesso sometimes has a "metallic" flavor coming from the high temperatures reached by the water container. But no big deal, overall I am happy I purchased this product so far.

I bought this machine based on the reviews I read, and I agree with them - this is an excellent purchase for the money. Having never owned an espresso machine - but having an unaffordable addition to Starbucks' soy lattes - I thought I'd give it a shot. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and a great deal. One word of caution - I couldn't get it to work with thse pre-packed espresso pods Starbucks sells. Overall an excellent value!

The frother on the espresso side does not work at all on my unit. I've tried it twice now and get absolutely nothing.
