DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker

Overall, it is a great machine. I don't know much about espresso machinces but I do have a few complaints about this one.
1) The coffee doesn't always come out consistantly dark. Usually the coffee comes out black for the first 2 oz (1 oz per cup) then the additional 2 oz (1 oz per cup) is a lot more clear. I have used other machines that seem to extract more coffee flavor from the grinds.
2) After removing the plastic frothing peice for cleaning, when putting it back on, you must be careful not to strip the threads.
3) The area for the espresso cups isn't very tall, you either have to put cups in at an angle for them to fit under the espresso spout, or you have to use shorter, shot glass like cups (or true espresso cups) for them to fit.
Some things that i like about this machine.
1) Easy to use
2) Fast warm up time
3) Easy to clean
4) The frother frothes really well.
5) Very good machine for the price. I paid $100.
I have been using home Espresso machines for 5 years now. I bought the DeLonghi EC155 to replace the 5-6 year old machine I had that reached "maturity". The EC155 is a basic machine, a good value for $100. The only complaint I have is that the water tank is too small, so it requires frequent fill ups.
I purchased this through the Kitchen Clique, and have had a wonderful experience, both with the company and with the machine. It works very well, and the pump driven mechanism never fails to please. Keep in mind it has a heat up period, but you can speed the process up manually, and it takes no time at all. I love this machine!
This is a great Espresso Maker, although i don't know how well i can actualy rate it because of this being my first. For my uses it works great and tastes great too. The only critique is that over all the machine is meant for small uses- 2 cups at a time or possiably 4. The time it takes to make cappaccinos (that is all we make) is longer due to the fact of the steemer can only froth, or steam small amounts of milk at a time. It can take pods, and ground espresso. Overall great cups of espresso/ cappaccino.
This is my first pump machine, until now I have been steam driven. Wow, what a difference. I choose it based on price + reviews + past experience with DeLonghi. The reviews were the major factor.
I have fed a variety of coffees through the machine, used an incorrect grind etc, just to test it. It provides perfect creama every time.
Starbuck's stock may just go down as I now make really good espresso at home.
My only complaints, and I think with time they won't be complaints any more, is that when fitting the coffee basket to the machine it is pretty easy to cross thread, and I would prefer the steam wand be mounted just a little higher. The steam wand by the way foams well and easily. I have only my old steam machine to compare to, but this machine is a joy.
Amazon as usual provided a highly competitive price, and better shipping than I had any right to expect.

I wouldn't even have given it one star, but the system wouldn't allow me to put ZERO! This machine broke after TWO weeks. Week two the heating element refused to heat up enough to work properly. Green light never came on...after leaving the unit on for hours. Even with "pre-heating" techniques...it STILL would not heat up to maximum. Could not have been overuse. Used it once, perhaps twice a day. Pay more for a higher quality machine. The adage "you get what you pay for" most definitely applies here.
for the price I paid, I was disappointed in the expresso maker. After only 1 month the green 'ready' light went out. Also the distance between where the coffee drips and the base of the machine is very very short. An espresso cup hardly fits. I have had DeLonghi in the past and had great machines, but this one is not up to DeLonghi quality.
I was always skeptical of expensive espresso machines and wondered why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for an expensive machine. It turns out that the more expensive and quality machines are "pump-driven" rather than the typical "steam driven" found at your local Wally World and such. A pump driven machine will hit pressures 4-5 times greater than that of a steam driven machine and gets much better extraction from the espresso grinds (better flavor) and are the only machines capable of generating the "chrema" foam at the top of the espresso.
The DelLonghi EC155 is an excellent budget machine found for under $100 that is pump driven. I was happy with my old steam driven Delonghi, but once I received this I realized that I didn't even know what I was missing. This espresso is as good or better than anything you'll get in a nice Italian restaurant or at your local Charbucks. The chrema that this thing produced is flat out great (you'll get a nice 1/4 layer of tasty emulsified foam). The convenience of pulling a single shot is great too, and you really only need the machine to warm up a few minutes before you pull a shot.
The best feature about this machine in my humble opinion is that it is E.S.E certified (easy serve espresso). This means that you can pick up the ESE certified pods from Charbucks or a good online pod retailer and not have to go to the trouble of grinding and tamping. This is a HUGE feature that even some more expensive machines do not have and is what eventually sold me on this unit. Having grown accustomed to the convenience of pod coffee, it was only natural to look for the same thing in my espresso machine. Do note that coffee (senseo style) pods will not work in here as those are much larger than the ESE certified pod. Try a nice blend from Baronet or another find espresso brand and you won't be sorry.
I highly recommend this machine. In short, it has fantastic features for the money, makes awesome espresso chrema, and it ESE certified for pod use. You will definitely not do any better than this machine for under $100.
not to bad i expected more out of it takes awhile to heat the milk and steam does not always come out a small stream of water but its just ok
One thing that really sticks out is the airflow mixed with the actual cafe' being pumped out. It tends to boost the espresso grounds even more to give a ton of crema. Of course, the larger unit where you place the grounds is a three-part piece but real easy to figure out and keep clean. Enjoy!
My first espresso machine, it does what it is advertised to do. Makes good espresso, with nice crema, steams milk effectively. I have absolutely no complaints.
I love this product! It was easy to learn, and from the first mocha I made it has produced great results. It's definitely worth the price, which is a bargain compared to the cost of some other machines out there.
I went with the recommendations/reviews rather than basing my purchase on price. I appreciate what people had to say because what I found in this machine is what I was hoping for. It is compact, easy to use, and delivers fantastic espresssos. I am very happy with my purchase because the quality of my coffee makes me feel like I wouldnt miss anything if I never visited another Starbucks in my life. The machine takes a few minutes to brew the coffee (you gota let it warm up) but once it starts cracking it, it's fast. Lots of beautifuly, rich, favorful crema. Only complain is that I cant fit a regular size cup under the coffee filter/outlet. So if you purchase this machine, you may want to get the small espresso cups. I dont mind so much because I love my espressos and small cups make the experience that much more authentic. Buy this and enjoy. It's a good value for the quality of coffee.
This is a great machine. Easy to use and keep clean, that turns out delightful coffee with a rich frothy crema every time. It is as good for making regular espresso with ground coffee, as it is when you use pods. Starbucks coffee is ideal and the Strabucks pod is more effective.
This is my first espresso maker, so I am no expert, but it works perfectly for me. Its important to compress the coffee correctly, but once you do that, it makes excellent coffee. You also have to heat the milk first in the microwave if you want really hot latte's but the steamer works great in general.
This system is also very compact and does not look ridiculous in your kitchen which was important for me.
I could not ask for more for the money.
For the money, this is a great espresso machine. The only 2 cons I think are that it takes a while to warm up (10-15 minutes before you can use it), and the steamer doesn't go incredibly hot either (although if you don't like it scaldingly hot, like me, it's actually a benifit).
All in all, very worth the money.
This is my first pump-driven espresso machine, although I have had several small, steam-driven ones (they seem to last about 4 years, then quit). It is a little more complicated to use, but the result is more than worth the additional effort. I have been using it daily for about a month and a half, and I have no real complaints. I wish there were more space between the coffee holder and the deck, since I have to use a really shallow cup, but that is minor. The plentiful crema is a luxury, and the steamer works really well and quickly. If you don't want to spend hundreds (or thousands) more, but you want a pump-driven machine, I think this is a great solution.
I love espresso, and this little baby makes a great cup. Here are a few points that might be useful for you to know:
Good points:
*It doesn't take up too much room on the counter and looks nice with it's silver metal accents.
*The water reservoir is a good size, you can make about 8-10 espressos before you need to refill it, which is very easy to do, and there is a clear section behind the basket which shows the water level.
*Fast heat-up time (only about a minute), good frothing wand, no wait time between frothing and brewing (though you do have to wait a little between brewing and frothing).
Be warned:
*Frothing wand is only 3 1/4 inches from the counter top. Not a big deal, I just went and bought a frothing cup that is about that height.
*Distance from grounds basket to tray is only 2 1/2 inches, I usually use a small espresso cup.
*Built-in tamper sucks, buy a good metal one.
*You don't end up with a nice dry puck, the grounds basket is a watery soup after your espresso is made, so I dump it down the disposal.
*You will end up drinking more espresso than you mean to, it's that good!
Seriously, I chose this machine after a lot of online researching, and decided on this one based on its outstanding reviews and great price. What led me to it were the reviews of another DeLonghi, the EC140B, which is an older and less attractive model, but had reviews from people who had owned theirs for 6 and 10 years! I'm hoping that this one will have the same longevity.
impatiently waiting 30 + minutes to get the dark fluid out is so annoying that i'll be sending mine back. the process to get a second cup is messy, then the coffee is nothing special, and the steam wand ejects more water than air. how can so many reviewers be so off the mark?
I've had a couple of low-end steam-based espresso makers in the past. When I saw this reasonably priced pump-type unit I bought it knowing that this is the best way to make espresso.
I've been very happy with the machine. I have been using Illy ESE espresso pods that I also bought on Amazon; these are very convenient.
The frother works well though as others have mentioned, the distance between the frother and the bend of the steam pipe is too short, but it's workable.
I found cleanup to be very easy... I just take everything apart, wash the pieces in parts in the upper rack of the dishwasher and wipe down the machine.
Overall this is a fine espresso machine at a great value. If you have had the cheap steam-based units in the past, try this machine and you will be very happy with the results.
It works great, and the price is right. Why pay $500?
I wanted an espresso machine for my office but did not want to spend much money - but I am very picky about the quality of my expresso. This machine does a SUPER job. The coffee has a thick crema and milk is easily and well steamded. Very easy to use. This machine fits the bill most excellently.
I've had 4 home espresso units over the years. Typically only spent $60 or so and have been reasonable happy with them. This is the 1st pump unit and I clearly didn't know what I was missing. It's easier to use and I can't help but sense the espresso itself is better tasting and a better texture. Sounds goofy but it's my impression. The price was right and that my my wife likes it from her mechanically challenged state is a big plus. We make 3-5 latte`s a day and would highly recommend this unit.
This little machine rocks! I use it every day and for the price, it can't be beat. I highly recommend this machine for anybody looking for an espresso maker in this price range. It's fast and makes great espresso.
I had this machine only a few days nowandsimple love it!! I lived in Italy for over three years in the past and know what an espresso should taste like. This machine definatley does the job, and a good job at that. When the espresso is coming out of the machine,it is pure creme just like it is supposed to be. I have owned many other cheap espresso machines along with one other 15 bar pump machine and I was definatley missing out until now. Don't hesitated tobuy. I did notice out of all reviews here there were two reviews that weren't so good. Just remember, machines are machines and sometimes they are deffective. If thats the case, send it back for a new one and enjoy a very fine espresso!
